How to Find Your Own Ring Size
Ever play the dangerous game of “I think this finger is probably a size six?" We’ve all been there.
And unfortunately, ring sizing is one of those things people think is easy… until they realize fingers (and ring sizes) are weirdly inconsistent!
Temperature changes them. Salt changes them. Time of day changes them. Honestly? Your fingers are dramatic. So, here’s how to actually figure out your ring size correctly at home.

How Ring Sizing Works
Jeweler Note: Ring sizes are typically determined by the inner circumference of the ring, measured in millimeters. When measuring, ensure your ruler has millimeters.
Your Ring Should Feel Secure — Not Suffocating
First and foremost, a properly fitting ring should:
• Slide on easily
• Need a tiny bit of effort coming off
• Stay secure during daily wear
• Not leave your finger throbbing by lunchtime
If your ring leaves deep indents, cuts off circulation, or makes you question your life choices every time you remove it… it’s too tight.
If it spins constantly or feels like it might launch across the room while washing your hands… too loose.
We’re looking for the sweet spot. And, there are a lot of factors that affect sizing. When you're sizing at home, I want you to think about these tips:
| Ring Sizing Tip | Why It Matters | What To Do Instead |
| Don’t size your fingers when cold | Cold fingers shrink | Measure at room temperature |
| Don’t size after workouts | Fingers swell | Wait until your body settles |
| Wide bands fit tighter | More surface area changes the fit | Consider sizing up slightly but be aware some jewelers don't do half sizes! |
| Your dominant hand is usually bigger | Most people have slight size differences | Always measure the exact finger |
| Don’t panic over half sizes | Small adjustments are normal | A jeweler can guide the best fit |
One More Thing Nobody Talks About
Your ring size can change over time.
Weather, hormones, hydration, travel, pregnancy, medication, workouts, even sodium intake can affect your fingers.
So don’t get too emotionally attached to a specific number. It’s just information that helps your jewelry fit comfortably.
What This Means for You
The right ring size should feel effortless. It also will save you money!
Not painfully tight. Not constantly slipping off. Not something you’re adjusting every five seconds.
Because if your ring is sliding around, chances are, so is the metal plating! You're plating can wear down from ill-fitting rings. Thankfully, we offer free yearly replating! But, not every jewelry store does. In fact, I'd wager it would be rare for you to find a jeweler store that will replate your jewelry at all.
Finding Your Ring Size 🕵️
At-Home Tip #1 The String Trick
Yes, you can technically measure your finger at home with string or paper. Wrap it around your finger, mark the overlap point, then measure it against a ruler, using millimeters.
But here’s my jeweler honesty moment:
This method is okay… but not perfect.
People usually pull too tight, measure unevenly, or forget that rings also have to fit over the knuckle and not just the base of your finger. It's temperamental!
So, if you use the string trick, keep it loose enough that it could comfortably slide on and off.

At-Home Tip #2 The Wire Method
Look, I get it. You probably don't have wire laying around. But, if you do, just use the same method as above but with flexible wire!
This method can be pretty spot on for thin banded rings. But, you might want to size up for thicker, less flexible bands.
Just remember to keep it loose enough that it could comfortably slide on and off. You know the drill.
At-Home Tip #3 Measure Your Favorite Ring *Most Accurate*
Grab a piece of paper (no wire or string needed) and measure the circumference of your favorite ring. Using paper will be flexible but sturdy - trust me the paper is key. And, better yet, pick a ring that might have a similar band thickness!
Line your ring with the paper and mark it with a sharpie. Then, lay it out along a ruler. and measure your sharpie marks using millimeters.
This method works about 90% of the time. And that other 10% still works, it just might be hair off.
Why would it be slightly off? Think of pants, and how you might be one size at one store but another size completely at the next. That's ring sizes. Not all jewelers' mandrels (ring sizer) are made equally and sometimes it's off by a hair or two.
Okay now let’s flip the script. Maybe you’re secretly planning a proposal. Grabbing their favorite ring and measuring it or bringing it to a jeweler it the best option.
